YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT THAT
At the Main Square, the newly reconstructed and at the same time historically valuable house Nr. 55 will catch your eye. Above the adjacent narrow street, it is statically connected to the adjoining house by three spacer arcs.
The magnificent burgher house offers an exposition of Interior Styles in the Spiš region. The unusual furnishings consist of art and craft exhibits from the 17th century up to the 19th century furnishings.
The establishment of the museum dates back to 1994. A very rich and valuable fund managed by the Museum in Kežmarok was given space to delight enthusiasts and amaze experts on the premises which seem to be created for this kind of exhibits.
The period-furnished rooms draw us directly into the time of our ancestors. The dining room with its pewter dishes and porcelain with painted coats of arms is very untraditional. The original wooden ceiling also deserves our attention. On the first floor there is a beautiful collection of pipes, desks and clocks. A women’s travel suitcase as big as a small wardrobe will also catch your attention.
The exposition is filled with beautiful furniture, mostly from the estate of the Badányi family. Certainly the most valuable exhibit is a wedding chest made in the mid-17th century. Equally rare is the classicist chest excellently decorated with exotic plants.
A CHILLING LEGEND
Ancient houses are often surrounded by stories. One comes from the time when the famous Kežmarok’s goldsmith Daniel Haltz used to live in this house with his daughter and son-in-law.
Goldsmith’s daughter, married to a jealous butcher, would like to shout her despair from the rooftops. But she can’t… She disappeared without a trace, as did her husband. At the entrance there were only full chests left, as if they were preparing to travel; and a small pool of blood. Did it belong to the beauty? All we know for sure is, that truth in the vortex of doubt is part of the old story…
DO NOT MISS
Above all, don’t miss a view of the quaint house of Marshal Kray (now part of the Hviezdoslav Hotel), which is located only four houses to the left from the Museum of Interior Styles. It is unique because it has never had a front door from the street. Its interior was always entered through the neighbors.
For lovers of antique beauty we recommend the historical route, which smoothly leads to the most beautiful and valuable of what Kežmarok can offer you.
